THE REST OF HOW TO PRACTICE YOUR PIECES

Last time we were talking about how to practice your pieces of music after you've gained control of your technique with my Technique Builder and One Year Lesson Series.

We left off by playing your piece initially by sounding the notes or note combinations one at a time to every other click of the Metronome, which is ticking away at MM 42. Very Slow !

I take my new pieces and use this starting technique in four measure blocks. It doesn't matter, at this point, whether those blocks coincide with the composition's musical values.

Next you simply take this process and put it through the Technique Builder Phases just as you did with the Five Disciplines with all the variations on rhythms, note values and accents. This will point out where the difficult fingerings are in the piece and teach you to overcome them, just as it did with the Technique Builder Series.

If the piece has a suggested Tempo of Quarter Note equals MM 60 and the fastest note values in the piece are Sixteenth notes, then you stop at that respective Phase in the Technique Builder Method.

Just as we did with learning the Five Disicplines of Technique, always play with controlled minimal finger movement, loud volume and the best, nail free tone you can muster. This is not the ultimate way you'll play the piece, obviously, but it is the way to ingrain it into your system.

Remember, your piece of music is not music yet. You are, at the moment, just getting used to the fingering patterns and harmonies.

Believe it or, this process accomplishes two things sub-consciously.

One, it will develop muscle memory of the fingerings, which will help in memorizing the piece eventually and Two, you will start forming your interpretive stances with the piece, what with making decisions about tone varieties, dynamic range, accelerando's and diminuendos, etc..

And this is what it is all about.
